GoSun’s portable solar refrigerator/freezer has serious off-grid cooling

GoSun has long relied on the sun as the power source for its off-grid cooking system. Two years ago, it used solar radiant energy for cooling and added the Chill portable refrigerator to its solar product lineup. Now it has expanded the brand new Chillest, which is a larger dual-zone refrigerator/freezer that can serve ice cream in the desert and runs indefinitely on a combination of integrated lithium batteries and an off-grid power supply that can be installed with a solar table.

If the name "coolest cooler" sounds familiar, you might think of "coolest cooler", which is the infamous Kickstarter party cooler/multifunctional tool, which ranges from the huge success of crowdfunding to garbage incineration Business failure. The similarity of the names is not a coincidence, because GoSun cited Coolest as inspiration in the harshest way.

"Chillest was inspired by Coolest Cooler (a veritable rubbish), but it was designed by a reputable company that has more than 13 products on the market," GoSun said in the first two paragraphs of its Chillest press release Say.

Given how toxic the name “Coolest Cooler” is, we’re not sure if it’s a good idea to quote it, even if ironically, it’s the same as a similar product you’re trying to launch through a crowdfunding campaign, but GoSun seems very confident of its Chillest It is light-years longer than the unsuccessful magic cooler. To be precise, unlike the Coolest team, it brings years of successful crowdfunding campaigns and actual product experience, from solar ovens to wallet-sized tableware.

GoSun refers to Chillest as an "iceless cooler", but it is best to identify it as a 12V compressor refrigerator/freezer, just like the models that are hard-wired to RVs of all sizes and styles. Just like Furrion's eRove, GoSun cut the power cord to create a portable refrigerator/freezer that can keep humming even when it is far from the vehicle or power outlet. It includes wheels and retractable handles for this purpose.

In order to support off-grid operation, GoSun equipped Chillest with a 100 Wh lithium battery that can be cooled for approximately 10 hours. This is enough for beach days, but if you want to keep food cold during a multi-day camping trip, you can plug in the included multi-position 20-watt solar table, which can be fixed to the cooler with a single leg. GoSun stated that the solar meter can fully charge the Chillest in five hours and/or it can run indefinitely as long as it is used continuously. The refrigerator is also equipped with a DC power cord and an AC adapter, and it can run for about 30 hours using the 266 watt-hour external portable power bank provided by GoSun.

Unlike the small single-compartment Chill, the 45-L Chillest has two separate compartments and temperature zones, so you can refrigerate food on one side and freeze on the other. The individual temperatures can be adjusted from -4 to 68°F (-20 to 20°C) using the physical buttons or the accompanying mobile app.

Chillest is equipped with convenient standard features such as internal lighting, tie-down hooks to fix it on a suitcase or pickup bed, a front storage bag, a cutting board that can be stored in the lid, and a built-in corkscrew. Buyers can further enhance the utility of Chillest through the available additional components, such as portable power banks, Bluetooth speakers connected to the side, and umbrellas mounted on the same stand as the solar table.

GoSun has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the launch of Chillest. It offers the basic Chillest commitment level, starting at $579-very affordable for portable refrigerators/freezers with built-in batteries. Those who want a solar table will find it packaged with Chillest at a promised price of $679. Both of these offers save $320 over the planned retail price.
