STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island is under threat of severe, pummeling thunderstorms Monday, prompting NYC Emergency Management to issue a travel advisory for the morning and afternoon commutes.

Following a storm that could cause some flooding on Staten Island on Sunday night, a separate system is expected to move into the New York City area around 2 p.m., and could bring with it hazardous conditions, including strong winds, damaging hail and the possibility for an isolated tornado.

“New Yorkers should prepare for a wet, windy commute Monday afternoon and evening,” said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol. “We urge all New Yorkers to exercise caution and prepare for potential power outages.”

Both localized and coastal flooding is very possible during periods of heavy rainfall; at least a half inch of rain is expected to fall throughout Monday, with totals possibly exceeding that in some areas.

Winds are expected to be 20 mph to 25 mph with peak wind gusts of up to 30 mph expected between 2 and 10 p.m. Monday. Parts of the city could also experience wind gusts as high as 60 mph.

The city is urging residents who must travel to use public transportation and allow for extra travel time. Drivers are asked to avoid flooded roadways. The city is also asking residents to secure property loose, light-weight property like garbage cans, potted plants or lawn furniture that can be easily blown away.

The city has issued the following safety tips ahead of the potentially hazardous weather:
