Here are the top five stories today in Tampa:

1. The city of Tampa closed on the purchase of the Penny Saver Food Market Property next to Fair Oaks Park on North 34th Street as plans move forward for a new state-of-the-art recreation complex after a holdup earlier this year. Demolition of Penny Saver is set to begin in the next 60 days. East Tampa CRA's Community Advisory Community contributed $1 million dollars to the effort. (Tampa Patch)

2. Fourteen Tampa restaurants have been honored with Wine Spectator 2022 Restaurant Awards. The restaurants recognized by the popular wine magazine include Bern's Steak House, Columbia Restaurant, Council Oak Steaks & Seafood at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa,and more. (WFLA, Tampa Patch)

3. The Tampa Firefighters Union has endorsed former Rep. Wengay Newton as he runs for the Democratic nomination for Florida House District 62. Newton has also been endorsed by the St. Petersburg Firefighters Union and the Suncoast Association of Firefighters and Paramedics. (Florida Politics)

5. The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, forward Anthony Cirelli and defenseman Erik Cernak each to an eight-year contract extension, according to a release from the team.
