Poor cleanliness, the discovery of a rats nest and a lack of suitable clothing has led to Wight Grill House in Newport receiving a ‘Major Improvement Necessary’ rating from food hygiene inspectors.

The Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team paid a visit to the High Street establishment on the 9th May and found a number of serious faults in the operation of the takeaway, which has led to 4 major improvement notices being issued.

They found the standard of cleanliness was poor including light switches and door handles, flooring around freezers, a dirty extractor fan and around the threshold of fridge and freezer. Inspectors also found that raw meat was being stored next to cabbages and coleslaw and next to the cold drinks fridge.

During the inspection, it was found a number of food items including raw meats, coleslaw, salads and pizza toppings had not been marked with any date of when they were prepared, defrosted, or opened and when they must be used by.

The full report stated that managers were unclear on how to use the Safer Food Better Business pack to manage food hygiene safely and that other paperwork was incomplete. Staff members were also not wearing protective clothing such as; aprons, hair nets and jackets.

Other issues found include; waste containers in a dirty condition, rubble on floor, a rat’s nests which had gone unnoticed, accumulation of food particles and dirt on the vinyl floor and the wall behind the rear work surface was covered in vinyl flooring and sticky tape, preventing it from being efficiently cleaned.

Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the Doors

Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 10 Compliance with structural requirements – 15 Confidence in management/control procedures – 20

Omg disgusting thought it looked tatty from outside let alone behind the scenes

Please can I have a deep fried rat and chips please.

How much for a rat kebab?

Tonight’s special Rat Burger & Chips…

1 star, that’s overly generous, should have been closed down immediately. Still, it’s only the peasants that eat slop there, I expect the canteen at county hall is cleaner than an operating theatre.

With a rating like that, they must be offering discounts. In these inflationary days my money isn’t going so far. Count me in for a cheap kebab.

How the heck did it even achieve 1 star ?????? Omg should have been shut down immediately, …. A rat’s nest !!!!! Filth grot and grime. Did the staff need specsavers ??? (Other optician’s are available ). Wouldn’t go there if it was the last place on earth ….

Wonder how many have woken up with a bad stomach and blamed it on a dodgy beer at Yates

British standards have coincidentally fallen sharply since so many arrivals fill our food outlets

No hint of xenophobia here then Mrs T.

mrs t no doubt looks like the vomit lady from little britain.foreigners blaaaaaaaaah

British standards? They went out with the ark deary!we also have our own first rate brand of slobs passing as “fast food eatery’s”ever happy to pass on Salmonella without a backward glance..nobody ever knows how clean a kitchen is apart from the staff in it “and they ain’t going to tell”!The ultra posh pub at Yarmouth “very English”had hideous reviews for cleanliness….you just can’t tell ,although obviously you can with your whopping great paint brush, and prejudicial views!.

Amazingly they get 5 star reviews on Google. I guess people don’t mind rats and filth.

Rat’s apparently are nutritious and tasty

Horrible little hovel. What possesses people who frequent dumps like this is beyond me.
